In the crisp autumn air, the 70th-anniversary celebration of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) took place with grandeur at the Xianlin Campus Gymnasium. The event welcomed esteemed guests from the world of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including academicians and nationally honored TCM masters, along with a distinguished group of overseas representatives. Among them was Professor Shulan Tang, Principal of Shulan College of TCM in the UK, who returned to celebrate this milestone with her alma mater.
During the ceremony, Chen Zhu, Vice Chair of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a video message. He praised NJUCM’s dedication over the past 70 years in cultivating TCM talents of global renown and advancing traditional Chinese culture. Chen encouraged NJUCM to uphold its motto of "Confidence and Dedication" as it aims to establish itself as a world-class institution in TCM. Following his remarks, alumni representatives read congratulatory messages, and students and faculty spanning three generations recited a commemorative tribute, "Seventy Years of Youthful Spirit."
In the evening, the university presented a thematic gala titled "Passing the Torch, Aspiring for Excellence," which had been meticulously prepared for over a year. Divided into three acts—Xinglin: Woven Heritage, Materia Medica: Pursuing Innovation, and National Medicine: Youthful Legacy—the performance traced the significant milestones in NJUCM's 70-year history, weaving a visually captivating and thought-provoking narrative.
A special honor followed the celebration: Professor Shulan Tang’s portrait was added to the School History Hall of NJUCM Museum, recognizing her as an outstanding alumna in the global TCM community. Her mentors, TCM masters Wang Mianzhi and Xia Guicheng, were also commemorated in the hall.
As Principal of Shulan College of TCM in the UK and a distinguished professor and doctoral advisor at Anhui University of Chinese Medicine, Professor Tang has made significant contributions to gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and dermatology within TCM. She is renowned as a clinician and educator who has brought TCM practices to a global audience.
Reflecting on the celebration, Professor Tang expressed her delight at returning to NJUCM, wishing her alma mater continued success in nurturing future generations of TCM practitioners. She shared her heartfelt wish for NJUCM’s bright future, stating, "Happy anniversary to my alma mater, may it flourish with even greater success and inspire students worldwide."
The summit focused on promoting the spirit of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) characterized by "benevolence, harmony, precision, and sincerity," and aimed to spread Confucian medical culture. The event gathered 150 TCM experts from countries including China, the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, and Germany to discuss the latest academic achievements and experiences in various areas such as TCM diagnostics, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and clinical practice and research.
