Professor Shulan Tang Attends the 21st World TCM Conference and China-Europe Forum
Professor Shulan Tang, Dean of LONDON Chinese Medicine College and Director of the China-UK Traditional Chinese Medicine Center, attended the 21st World Traditional Chinese Medicine Conference and the 7th World Traditional Chinese Medicine Education Conference held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, from October 24 to 26, 2024. The event was hosted by the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.
The summit focused on promoting the spirit of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) characterized by "benevolence, harmony, precision, and sincerity," and aimed to spread Confucian medical culture. The event gathered 150 TCM experts from countries including China, the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, and Germany to discuss the latest academic achievements and experiences in various areas such as TCM diagnostics, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and clinical practice and research.
During the Chinese Medicine Education Conference, Professor Tang was awarded the "Executive Director Certificate of the 4th Council of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies Education Guidance Committee" by Academician Zhang Boli of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a recognition of her outstanding academic contributions in the field of international Chinese medicine education.
Throughout the event, Professor Tang had the honor of meeting with many European Chinese medicine experts and had face-to-face discussions with Academician Zhang Boli. She attended his keynote speeches on several occasions.
In his speech, Academician Zhang shared his unique insights on Chinese medicine education and academic philosophy, particularly his deep passion for Chinese medicine culture.
Academician Zhang specifically emphasized that the cultivation of Chinese medicine thinking should focus on “reading the classics, practicing in the clinic, learning from master teachers, and developing intuition.” He used the "three stages of reading" to vividly illustrate the key methods for studying the classics of Chinese medicine:
-
Combining reading the classics with practice: While the written word is easy to understand, truth must be felt and verified in the clinic, gradually leading to a comprehensive understanding.
-
Perseverance and careful study of the classics: Studying the classics requires a gradual, step-by-step approach, until one reaches a clear and profound understanding, akin to a calm pond reflecting the sky.
-
Combining with the spirit of serving the world: Reading the classics with reverence and integrating the spirit of "Great Doctors with Integrity and Sincerity," applying knowledge with faith, and gaining insight through time.
During the conference in Paris, Professor Tang delivered an academic lecture titled "The Mystical Methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Treating Severe COVID-19 Cases" in the European Chinese Medicine Experts' Session.
On October 27, Professor Tang, along with Academician Zhang and his team, traveled to Brussels, Belgium, to participate in the first China-Europe Traditional Chinese Medicine Forum. She also took part in the "Discussion on the Global Spread of Chinese Medicine and Health Culture," where she and Chinese medicine experts from home and abroad discussed the dissemination and development of Chinese medicine on the international stage.
